When you publish a new book on Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon asks whether it contains AI-generated content. Here is the difference as Amazon describes it. Rules can change, so read Amazon's current help page before you publish. This guide is general information, not legal advice.

AI-generated: you tell Amazon

Amazon says text, images or translations created by an AI tool count as AI-generated and must be reported when you publish a new book, even if you edited them afterward.

AI-assisted: you do not have to tell Amazon

Amazon says that if you wrote the book yourself and used AI only to edit, check, refine or brainstorm, that is AI-assisted and is not reported.

What that means for proofreading and polishing

A proofread or polish of your own writing is the kind of editing Amazon calls AI-assisted. Still, you are the one who answers the question, so read the definitions yourself.

What that means for finishing a book with AI

If AI wrote new chapters for you, those chapters are AI-generated text, and you should answer yes. The same goes for a cover picture made by an AI image tool.

Every book still has to follow the content rules

AI or not, the book must follow Amazon's content guidelines, including rights to everything in it and descriptions that do not mislead buyers.

Check the facts in anything AI wrote

AI can write smoothly about things that are not true. Check every name, date and claim before you publish.
